Htam
Hin at dawn and the color of black roofing plastic sheet.
Htam
Hin refugee camp was established in 1997, after the Burmese Army
launched a major offensive against the Karen National Union's southern
most district Mergui-Tavoy. Htam Hin, with a population over 9,000
Karen has the worst living condition among nine refugees camps along
Thai-Burma border. The houses are over crowded and only plastic
sheet are allowed for roofing. According to Thailand-Burma Border
Consortium (TBBC) there are 9,506 refugees in 2004. These Karen
people are from different villages in Mergui-Tavoy District or Tenasserim
division. Some fled their homes because of persecution by Burmese
army, others because they were forced to relocate by the Burmese
army, who were securing the area for development projects funded
by foreign investment.
